Choosing a New Heating System? Why Hydronic Might be Right for You

Apr 7, 2017 | Plumbing Advice, Radiant Heating

If you are considering a new heating system for your home or business, it can be hard to choose. Many think a forced-air system is the best solution, but a water-based or hydronic system has a lot of benefits that should be considered. In these systems, boilers are used to heat water, which is then sent through pipes which heat the air. Boilers are used in hot water baseboards, radiators, and radiant heat. Before you make a final decision on a new heating system, consider these advantages of a boiler-based system.

A hydronic system (where water is used to transfer heat) is more comfortable than forced air. The heat is distributed evenly, so instead of feeling warm near the duct, and cooler in other areas, rooms feel evenly heated. Moreover, in the case of radiant floor heat, your floors and feet will feel toasty warm.

Air quality is much improved with a water-based system. Forced air systems blow dust and allergens through the home every time it runs. Ducts can also develop mold which can turn into a major health issue when spores are blown into the home. If air quality and the added cost of a filtration system are a concern, a boiler system is the way to go.

A boiler system is very quiet. Forced air systems can at times be loud.  If the constant blowing of a forced air system grates on your nerves, a hydronic system would be a major improvement.

It is efficient. Hydronic systems are known for their efficiency, which will save you money in the long run.

At least one company has improved on this idea by making a plywood subfloor material manufactured with tubing grooves and aluminum heat diffuser plates built into them. The manufacturer claims that this product makes a radiant floor system (for new construction) considerably less expensive to install and faster to react to room temperature changes. Such products also allow for the use of half as much tubing or cabling, because the heat transfer of the floor is greatly improved compared with more traditional dry or wet floors.

Whether you have an older boiler system that needs an upgrade, or you are deciding on a whole new heating system for your home or business, hydronics are a smart choice. If you would like to find out more information about a boiler system in the NYC area, contact Aladdin Plumbing.
