Boiler Leakage? Here are Some Common Causes

Mar 3, 2017 | Plumbing Advice

Boiler leakage from a home or business heating boiler are not just a waste of water, they represent a potentially serious and dangerous issue. Most of us are not pumbers and as expected, do not have an understanding of the basic causes of boiler leaks. If you would like to protect yourself by learning more about how a boiler contractor can solve this all-too-common problem, we have a few tips. This article will discuss some frequent causes of boiler leakage.

Fixing Boiler Leakage

Boiler Leakage from Pressure Problems

A boiler is regularly exposed to high internal pressure, so it is not unusual for this pressure to cause periodic leaks. In fact, dripping is a part of your boiler’s safety system, and it is natural for this to occur from time to time. There is even a special pressure outlet pipe to allow water out of the tank should the pressure become excessively high.

Thus it is natural for a little bit of water to escape out through this pipe from time to time. Greater amounts of water, however, represent one of two serious problems: either the boiler is constantly being exposed to excessive internal pressure, or the outlet pipe has become damaged and needs to be replaced.

Boiler Leakage from Bad Boiler Seals

Your boiler contains at least two rubber rings, known as seals, whose purpose is to help form a watertight seal at connection points. Over time, being subject to both water and high temperatures, these seals have a tendency to break down and begin to crumble. This will allow water to escape from either the boiler or the boiler pump. Fortunately, replacing bad seals is a fairly basic task, one that most boiler contractors can accomplish with a minimum of fuss.
