Account for differences in sink depth.

Those with shallow sinks often look forward to the opportunity to upgrade to a sink with a deeper basin. While this is a great way to maximize the capacity of your sink, it can also lead to trouble where your plumbing is concerned. Should the new sink sit too low, it may have trouble connecting properly to the pre-existing pipes. This may mean that you have to install a new drain pipe.

To avoid this time-consuming and potentially expensive change, be sure to measure the tailpiece on your existing sink before selecting a replacement. The tailpiece is the length of pipe that connects the bottom of your sink to the tee joint. The length of the tailpiece correlates directly to the amount of extra sink depth you can add without having to have a new drainpipe installed.

Ensure the cutout size will match.

As you surely are already aware, not all sinks are the same size. What you might not realize is that even sinks with the same capacity or interior dimensions may not take up the same amount of space on your countertop. If the new sink is bigger than the old, this is not that much of a problem; it simply means you will have to cut a larger hole for the sink to sit in.

If your new sink happens to be smaller than the old, you will end up with unsightly gaps at the corners. Worse still, it may not fit in the prior cutout at all. Thus, before you make your ultimate selection, be sure to measure the size of your existing cutout. Do this from the bottom side, and be sure to measure all four sides, since the dimensions may not be perfectly square.
